Den amerikanske beatpoeten, förläggaren och ägaren till City Lights Bookstore i San Francisco, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, har tackat nej till "Janus Pannonius International Poetry Prize". Ett pris på 50 000 euro som delas ut av den ungerska PEN-klubben. Ferlinghetti påpekar att priset delvis finansieras av ungerska staten, och det är på grund av regeringens alltmer auktoritära styre och hoten mot yttrandefrihet och medborgerliga rättigheter i landet, som han inte vill ta emot priset. "The Prize is partially funded by the present Hungarian government, and since the policies of this right-wing regime tend toward authoritarian rule, and the consequent curtailing of freedom of expression and civil liberties, I find it impossible for me to accept." Han erbjud en lösning. Att pengarna istället skulle användas av PEN-klubben för att skapa en fond som hjälpte till att publicera ungerska författare som stödjer "total freedom of speech, civil rights and social justice." Under dessa villkor var han villig att ta emot priset.
